IELTS英文寫作攻略｜雅思Writing Task 1 地圖題map question分析

在上一篇章，我和同學談論到雅思卷一(IELTS Writing Task 1)短文中其中一類頗特別的問題，就是地圖問題 ( map question)。雖然地圖問題沒有求分析的數字或趨勢，但考生必須知道如何使用文字精準描述地理位置變化、設施佈局轉變，以及地域發展趨勢空間變化。對於很多考生來說，這是一項艱巨的挑戰。我在這篇會繼續和大家講解如何應對這類地圖問題。

在上一篇，我介紹了以羅盤方位來描述某建築物或物件的位置，即是用 (East, South, West, North )「東、南、西、北」等方位詞和相關詞彙，例如 northeastern、in the south of 、north of 。我們現在將再次使用在上一篇的一張Sawry District地圖來重溫這些詞語在句子中的用法：

請大家看上面的2020年Sawry District地圖。大家會見到Prestwich Primary School是位於Oak Avenue的南側。用英文表述，就是：Prestwich Primary is south of Oak Avenue (例句一) 。

除了方位詞之外，考生在作答地圖問題時，還要熟識使用幾個以下重要字眼來描寫某建築物的所在地點：

1.  XXX is located at YYY
2. XXX is situated in (at) YYY
3.  XXX is found in (at) YYY
4. XXX lies at YYY

這四個英文字(locate、situate、found、lie) 的意思都是「坐落、位於」。

我們現在看看1920年Sawry District地圖裡的 Tulebug Bros Cannery (Tulebug Bros罐頭廠)。這座Tulebug Bros罐頭廠於1920年坐落於Sawry District的西側， 用英文表述，就是：Tulebug Bros Cannery was located in Western Sawry  ( 例句二 ) 。

我們又看看2020年的Sawry地圖。大家不難看到Sawry District出現了一個新汽油站，Lonoco Petrol Station。這個油站位於Miller湖的旁邊，或更準確一點，位於湖北岸， 用英文表述的話，是：Lonoco Petrol Station lies on the northern shore of Miller’s Lake ( 例句三 ) ( Lonoco汽油站坐落於Miller湖北岸)。

但我察覺到有些同學使用locate這個字的時候，會直接把這個字當作主動動詞(或動態動詞 )用，即 active verb。例如：Tulebug Bros Cannery located in Western Sawry。他們用錯了，原因是這個動詞 locate 有兩個解釋，第一，locate 表示「發現、尋找」；第二，它用作表示某建築物 的「位置」，而若果是後者用法，locate要轉變為 past participle，這就是「located」；如果要解釋的話，我們可以從被動語態 (passive voice) 和主動語態 (active voice) 的角度來看；locate若是以「發現、尋找」的意思來使用的話，它是及物動詞 (transitive verb)，因此會接一個賓語 (object)，但問題建築物是死物，根本不能主動去「尋找、發現」其他物件或甚至是人。再者，以被動語態 (passive voice) 的寫法出現，句子的焦點便是強調某物件的某種狀態的存在情況。因此我們不能這樣來寫某某建築物的位置：The bank locates at the center of the city ( 該銀行位於市中心 ) ，而是：The bank is located at the center of the city。

此外，考生亦要懂得使用表達某東西的相對位置的詞彙，即是要懂得某東西相對於另一物件的所在位置，諸如 ：

1. next to
2. adjacent to (在 …. 的毗鄰)
3. on / at the corner of XXX street
4. in front of
5. opposite
6. across from  (在 …. 對面)
7. in the middle of
8. to the right of / to the left of 
9. on the right-hand side of / on the left-hand side of
10. along 
11. towards the top / bottom of the map
12. between X and Y
13. close to
14. in the vicinity of (在……附近)
15. flank (在… 側面 / 在…兩側)

我們現在看看 Sawry District 2020 年的地圖。在該年，店舖由原來一間店舖 (shop)，增加多一間，而這兩間店舖都夾在左側兩棟住宅大樓和右側三間房屋的之間，用英文表述，就是：The two shops are situated between the two residential buildings on the left and the three houses on the right ( 例句四 ) 。又看看2020年Sawry District地圖。Prestwich Primary的右側被三株樹木環繞著，用英文表述，可以是：The building is franked by three trees on the right-hand side ( 例句五 ) 。
