A recent study found that even if someone thinks a grown-up needs six hours of sleep per night, the respondent would only get four hours on average. Respondents who were between 40 and 45 years of age were the largest age group that had limited sleep.

The start-up Sleep did a survey in August 2019 about people's sleeping habits and opinions on the issue. It asked people to value sleep more. In the survey, over 50 percent of respondents said they do not get enough sleep.

The survey also showed that 46 percent of Hongkongers had given up one to five hours of sleep for their work in the past two weeks. Twenty-five percent have given up six to 10 hours, and 5 percent said they have given up 15 hours or more.

Although 97 percent of respondents think not getting enough sleep would affect their job or school work negatively, over 80 percent think not getting enough sleep is very common in Hong Kong. And 20 percent even think not getting enough sleep is a good thing, because it shows that the person is supposedly productive and able to do a lot in a short time.

Scientists have said that using your phone to play games or read the news is bad for sleeping because these activities make you think too much and so you cannot clear your mind.
