IELTS英文写作攻略｜雅思Writing Task 1 地图题map question分析

在上一篇章，我和同学谈论到雅思卷一(IELTS Writing Task 1)短文中其中一类颇特别的问题，就是地图问题 ( map question)。虽然地图问题没有求分析的数字或趋势，但考生必须知道如何使用文字精准描述地理位置变化、设施布局转变，以及地域发展趋势空间变化。对于很多考生来说，这是一项艰巨的挑战。我在这篇会继续和大家讲解如何应对这类地图问题。

在上一篇，我介绍了以罗盘方位来描述某建筑物或物件的位置，即是用 (East, South, West, North )「东、南、西、北」等方位词和相关词汇，例如 northeastern、in the south of 、north of 。我们现在将再次使用在上一篇的一张Sawry District地图来重温这些词语在句子中的用法：

请大家看上面的2020年Sawry District地图。大家会见到Prestwich Primary School是位于Oak Avenue的南侧。用英文表述，就是：Prestwich Primary is south of Oak Avenue (例句一) 。

除了方位词之外，考生在作答地图问题时，还要熟识使用几个以下重要字眼来描写某建筑物的所在地点：

1.  XXX is located at YYY
2. XXX is situated in (at) YYY
3.  XXX is found in (at) YYY
4. XXX lies at YYY

这四个英文字(locate、situate、found、lie) 的意思都是「坐落、位于」。

我们现在看看1920年Sawry District地图里的 Tulebug Bros Cannery (Tulebug Bros罐头厂)。这座Tulebug Bros罐头厂于1920年坐落于Sawry District的西侧， 用英文表述，就是：Tulebug Bros Cannery was located in Western Sawry  ( 例句二 ) 。

我们又看看2020年的Sawry地图。大家不难看到Sawry District出现了一个新汽油站，Lonoco Petrol Station。这个油站位于Miller湖的旁边，或更准确一点，位于湖北岸， 用英文表述的话，是：Lonoco Petrol Station lies on the northern shore of Miller’s Lake ( 例句三 ) ( Lonoco汽油站坐落于Miller湖北岸)。

但我察觉到有些同学使用locate这个字的时候，会直接把这个字当作主动动词(或动态动词 )用，即 active verb。例如：Tulebug Bros Cannery located in Western Sawry。他们用错了，原因是这个动词 locate 有两个解释，第一，locate 表示「发现、寻找」；第二，它用作表示某建筑物 的「位置」，而若果是后者用法，locate要转变为 past participle，这就是「located」；如果要解释的话，我们可以从被动语态 (passive voice) 和主动语态 (active voice) 的角度来看；locate若是以「发现、寻找」的意思来使用的话，它是及物动词 (transitive verb)，因此会接一个宾语 (object)，但问题建筑物是死物，根本不能主动去「寻找、发现」其他物件或甚至是人。再者，以被动语态 (passive voice) 的写法出现，句子的焦点便是强调某物件的某种状态的存在情况。因此我们不能这样来写某某建筑物的位置：The bank locates at the center of the city ( 该银行位于市中心 ) ，而是：The bank is located at the center of the city。

此外，考生亦要懂得使用表达某东西的相对位置的词汇，即是要懂得某东西相对于另一物件的所在位置，诸如 ：

1. next to
2. adjacent to (在 …. 的毗邻)
3. on / at the corner of XXX street
4. in front of
5. opposite
6. across from  (在 …. 对面)
7. in the middle of
8. to the right of / to the left of 
9. on the right-hand side of / on the left-hand side of
10. along 
11. towards the top / bottom of the map
12. between X and Y
13. close to
14. in the vicinity of (在……附近)
15. flank (在… 侧面 / 在…两侧)

我们现在看看 Sawry District 2020 年的地图。在该年，店舖由原来一间店舖 (shop)，增加多一间，而这两间店舖都夹在左侧两栋住宅大楼和右侧三间房屋的之间，用英文表述，就是：The two shops are situated between the two residential buildings on the left and the three houses on the right ( 例句四 ) 。又看看2020年Sawry District地图。Prestwich Primary的右侧被三株树木环绕著，用英文表述，可以是：The building is franked by three trees on the right-hand side ( 例句五 ) 。
