Tomorrow is Budget Day. What does Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po have in store for us? Many Hong Kong people are hoping he will dole out cash for every adult citizen. His predecessor John Tsang Chun-wah doled out $6,000 for every adult citizen in his 2011 budget. It costs the government $36 billion. Many people said at the time the cash dole-out was a long time coming. But others said the government could have used the $36 billion in more fruitful (productive) ways. This time, political parties from the opposition and establishment camps have ganged up on Chan Mo-po. They want him to dole out cash to everyone.
If something is in store for you, it means it is awaiting you, or something that is going to happen. To dole out something means to give something, such as money or food. The expression "a long time coming" means something arriving or happening after a long time. When people said it was a long time coming after Tsang Chun-wah gave everyone $6,000, they meant they had waited a long time for the government to dole out cash. The expression "gang up on" someone means to unite as a group against someone. Political parties from the opposition and establishment camps have ganged up on or united against Chan Mo-po and Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor. They want the government to dole out money to the people.
Will he dole out cash? It's anyone's guess, which means no one really knows. Chan Mo-po, of course, knows but he is keeping it to himself, which means he is not telling anyone. Hong Kong has become a divided society. We had nearly eight months of anti-government protests, followed by the Wuhan coronavirus. Doling out money will make people less unhappy. But I don't think it will solve Hong Kong's political problems. After people spend the money, they will still remember why they are unhappy. Hong Kong needs a political solution, not a money solution.
