又中又英——A sight to behold

　　People who invest in stocks know there is a huge bronze sculpture of a bull near the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street in Lower Manhattan. But they may not know the sculpture, called the Charging Bull or the Bull of Wall Street, is not actually on Wall Street but very near it on Broadway. This famous bull is often shown on TV when there is news about the New York Stock Exchange. The sculpture is 16 feet long, 11 feet tall, and weighs over 7,000 pounds. It is a sight to behold, which means it is very impressive and worth seeing. It was created by Italian immigrant artist Arturo Di Modica after the 1987 stock market crash known as Black Monday.
　　On the evening of December 14 1989 Di Modica drove the sculpture in a truck and illegally put it outside the New York Stock Exchange Building as a Christmas gift to the people of New York. Many came to see it. Police removed it later that day but the city government allowed it to be put on Broadway near Wall Street six days later because of public pressure. It has remained there ever since. I went to see it recently. It is truly a sight to behold. It was a cold day but tourists still formed a long line to have their pictures taken with the bull. Some tourists, especially women, had their pictures taken while fondling the testicles of the bull.
　　To fondle means to touch gently in a loving or sexual way. It was a sight to behold but I wouldn't be caught dead fondling the testicles of the Charging Bull. If you wouldn't be caught dead doing something it means you would never do it because it's embarrassing. Tourists believe fondling the testicles bring good luck and fertility. To me that's bullshit, which is another way to use the word "bull"! The Charging Bull got its name because it represents the courage of Americans, New York people, and a rising stock market.

　　那些投资股票的人，都知道在下曼哈顿华尔街的纽约证券交易所附近，有一尊巨大的铜质公牛塑像。但他们可能不知道，那个叫「铜牛」或「华尔街铜牛」的塑像，实则并不在华尔街，而是位处很近华尔街的百老汇大道。每当报道有关纽约证券交易所的新闻时，电视画面就很常出现这只著名的铜牛。这个塑像有十六呎长、十一呎高，重逾七千磅。它实在是a sight to behold，意即它甚为瞩目、非常值得一看、令人叹为观止。一九八七年被称为「黑色星期一」的股灾发生之后，意大利移民艺术家阿图罗．迪莫迪卡就创作了此铜牛。一九八九年十二月十四日傍晚，迪莫迪卡用卡车载着铜像，非法地将它放在纽约证券交易所大楼外面，作为给予纽约人的圣诞礼物。许多人闻风而至，要亲身观看。当天稍后时间警方已移除了铜像，但碍于舆论压力，六天后市政府便容许它放在百老汇大街近华尔街处。自此以后它便一直置放在那里。我最近就去看过它，实在非常值得一看（a sight to behold）。当天天气寒冷，游客却仍排了一条长长的人龙，要跟铜牛合照。有些游客，尤其是女士们，拍照的时候在抚弄着（fondling）铜牛的睾丸。
　　To fondle即去轻轻地爱抚或抚弄。铜牛虽然很值得一看（a sight to behold），但我死也不会（wouldn't be caught dead）去抚弄（fondling）铜牛的睾丸。若你wouldn't be caught dead doing something，那即是说你死也不会那样做，因为太尴尬了，做了便是出洋相。许多游客都相信抚弄（fondling）铜牛睾丸可以带来好运与繁育能力；对我来说那是bullshit、一派胡言——又是另一个用上公牛"bull"的用语！铜牛得名为Charging Bull，因为它代表着美国人和纽约人的勇气，以及股市上涨、充满能量的牛市。
