Highlights of The 41st Sing Tao Inter-School Debating Competition
Introduction
Co-organised by Sing Tao Daily, The Standard, and the Education Bureau, the Sing Tao Inter-School Debating Competition has been widely supported and recognized by schools and society since its inception in 1984, establishing itself as the premier annual flagship debating event in Hong Kong.
Marking its 42nd edition, the Competition undergoes a comprehensive upgrade—transforming from a traditional platform for language and critical thinking training into a Stage for Future Leaders:
Core Competency Development: Fully enhances students' bilingual skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, while refining their logical reasoning, analytical skills, and structural organization through debate training.
Nurturing Future Leaders: Heightens students' awareness of current affairs and cultivates critical thinking, guiding youth to engage with social development and voice their perspectives on contemporary issues.
Elevating Top Talent: Enhances top-tier debate standards through optimized tournament structures and targeted resources, while supporting emerging schools to foster diverse, high-caliber talent for society.
【Key Reforms and Highlights of This Edition】
The Tournament is scheduled to run from November 2026 through May 2027, accommodating a total quota of 152 teams—96 in the Chinese Section and 56 in the English Section. Operating on a single-elimination knockout format throughout, the Tournament introduces a dynamic, high-tempo exchange structure and public matches during the initial preliminary rounds (Rounds 1 and 2), significantly elevating both competitive spectator value and public outreach:
Re-engineered Preliminary Format (Rounds 1 & 2): Debates commence with a 2-minute construct speech by the Captain, proceeding directly into two intensive segments of Free Debate (interspersed with a 1-minute intermission), and conclude with a 1-minute summary speech by a designated speaker.
Public Mall Debates & Celebrity Exhibition Match: In Round 2, four teams from each division will be drawn to compete in a public shopping mall, bringing debate directly into the community. The event will feature a 10-to-20-minute Celebrity Exhibition Match, bringing together artists, public figures, and legal professionals to debate hot-button issues—maximizing media coverage and public engagement.
Return to Classical Debate Dynamics from Round 3: Advancing teams will revert to the standard multi-speaker format from Round 3 onwards, rigorously testing contestants' analytical depth, structural argumentation, and comprehensive critical thinking.
